How Our Lives as Children Affect Our Marriages

Published by under Relationships

I had to go the the ear, nose, and throat doctor about three weeks ago because of… a bad ear infection. Then I had to go back and have tubes put in my ear. There I was in that doctor’s office feeling all nervous, insecure, and a little scared. It brought back all of the feelings I had as a little girl.

I had horrible ear problems as a child and back then I remember when they just started having the ear, nose and throat doctors. I had to experience regular physicians taking a long needle and inserting it in my ear to drain it. As you cn imagine that was a horrible and scary event for a child.

Anyway, there I was recently in that doctor’s office “re-feeling” all those feelings as a child. All I wanted was for my husband to make it all better and to take me home. Just as I wanted as a child from my parents. There I was thinking the same thing only about my husband.

The thing I’m grateful for and how I feel this relates to our relationship in marriage is that I had two loving parents who did just that. They took me home and made it all better. I’m also so grateful that I have a husband that does the same. He wasn’t at the doctor’s office with me because we didn’t think the doctor was going to do the procedure then.

I decided when the doctor told me in the office that he could do the procedure I wanted to go ahead and get it over with. But just as soon as I was able to leave his office the first person I called was my safety net and that was my husband.

I knew he was there for me and that he would take care of me and he did. He had to go back to work but before he left me he made sure I was ok and on my way to sleep. We all need to know our spouse is our safe place. Just as a child needs that safe place with their parents, we need that safe place with our spouse.

We’re all vulnerable at times and we need our spouses. It’s a very secure feeling to know they’re there for you and that they’re your safe place.
