How To Create Meaningful Anniversaries

Rick and I have been talking recently about… going on an anniversary trip where we would actually revisit the route and all the places we went on our honeymoon. We quickly realized this would be quite an undertaking. You see, we now live in Utah and when we got married we were married in Washington, D.C. and we had our reception in North Carolina where I grew up.

We then left from North Carolina to move across country to California. That was our honeymoon. Rick was in the U.S. Navy at the time. He was being transferred to California and now he had a wife! We made several stops along the way and Salt Lake was one of the places where we stayed for for a few days. Some of Rick’s family lived there.

We finally arrived in California after about three weeks of honeymooning across country! So… when we were about to celebrate our 30th anniversary last year, we started remembering and talking and laughing about all those fun places we visited on that honeymoon trip.

We thought it would be great to redo the entire trip just like we did all those years ago. But then we realized that might take several weeks and maybe we should scale it down just a bit.  So then we realized that maybe we could just travel to California from Utah and revisit all the fun places we once visited in California.

Places like Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, and going down the coast to Santa Cruz and visiting the old Boardwalk. Then we could go on to Monterrey, Carmel, and Big Sur. After that we could head for Disneyland and San Diego! What an anniversary celebration this would be!

But like so often happens in life, we got thrown a bit of a curve ball last year (the year of our 30th anniversary).  Our second son was married and so we had to invest “only” a few thousand dollars for our part of his wedding. So… our 30th anniversary trip got delayed.

Then we decided we would take the trip this year for our 31st anniversary. And now our youngest son is preparing to soon serve a mission for our church so it looks like our 30th anniversary trip will be delayed to our 32nd anniversary. We haven’t given up on that anniversary trip. We’re still planning it. And we will take it. It just seems that we won’t be taking it quite as soon as we had planned!

So now it’s your turn! Think about your honeymoon and see what you can come up with that would make for a fun anniversary celebration. I’ll continue with a few more ideas in my next post, How to Create Meaningful Anniversaries – Part 2.
